Vanessa Mdee is a Tanzanian singer, rapper, television personality, and radio host. Her full name is Vanessa Hau Mdee. She is the first Tanzanian MTV Base VJ.

She hosted shows like Epic Bongo Star Search and Dume Challenge for ITV Tanzania. She has been privileged to interview big artists like Rick Ross, and Ludacris among others.

Early Life

She was born on 7 June 1988 in Arusha, Tanzania. Her father Sammy Mdee was a journalist but later changed occupation to be a diplomat. Her mother is Sophia Mdee.

Her sisters are Marianne Namshali Mdee popularly known as Mimi Mars and Nancy Namtero Tero Mdee.

Education

Juu hitmaker went to Arusha Modern High School and later joined the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) for a law degree.

Before venturing into music, she hosted TV and Award shows at MTV Base VJ in 2007. Her shows included Epic Bongo Star Search and Dume Challenge.

In 2008, she worked with the Staying Alive Foundation and also joined their Z!nduka Campaign, a campaign aimed at the eradication of malaria.

While as a TV host, she was able to visit countries like Kenya, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Angola.

In 2012, she ventured in music where she worked with A.Y and Ommy Dimples on the song ‘Me and You’.

In 2013, she released a single ‘closer’ Which topped the charts for 13 weeks and won four nominations at the Tanzania Music Awards including R&B Song of the year.

In 2014, she took part in the Coke Studio Africa season 2 where she collaborated with Nigerian artist Burna Boy.

In 2017, she signed by the international music distributor Universal Music Group (UMG) as the first African.

In 2018, she launched her first album ‘Money Mondays’ with 18 tracks including ‘Cash Madame’, ‘Money Mondays’, ‘The Hustle’, ‘Kisela’ amongst others.

In 2019, she released ‘That’s For Me’ featuring South African duo Distruction Boyz under Universal Music Group.

In 2020, she quit music and said she would produce music but not consider herself part of the industry.
